The famous flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya posed for the photograph on the cover of the book 70 years before the book was published.


The Palae Bar in the story diary of a composer: a one note symphony is a real bar in Copenhagen. It has evolved, however, from a bodega for young drunks into a bodega for old drunks.


The Zanzibar Café (Le Zanzibar) in the stories the mutations, nos. i-xiii: a universe of dust and the darkbloom vignettes is a real café in Paris. It specializes in African and Latin cuisine.


Maria, Juliet, Malene, Mylene, Sabina, Carmen, Miranda, Marrikka, Edwige, Darkbloom, and Madeline are all the same woman with different names.  


Martin is many different people with the same name.


Paya’s Don Quixote’s Map of the World was cited as an influence and inspiration for One Note Symphonies and for the story diary of a composer: a one note symphony specifically. 


The idea for the portrait came to the author while he was walking down an empty street in Amsterdam at sunrise after a party that lasted all night in which he met several people and spoke to them on a balcony. He wrote the story in 3 hours later that day after breakfast. It was never edited.


an antidote for roses was originally written in French and then translated into English.


The story between the last read pages of an interrupted novel touches on vegrandiscapillamor, a relatively harmless psychosexual obsession.


pneumania is based on a true story. The author spent five days watching a woman enter and exit an apartment building across the street from the flat he was renting in Stockholm. Only once did someone enter with her.


In the story pneumania the relationship between music and flying is implied.


The novel that Martin is carrying in the story between the last read pages of an interrupted novel when he tries to deliver the Russian woman’s letter is Don Quixote’s Map of the World.


The bicycle in the story the genealogy of the bicycle, or maria (a true story) is the same bicycle ridden by Tamina in The Book of Laughter and Forgetting.


In the story elephant pieces, the girl implores Martin to remember her but Martin can’t hear her above the din of the other voices. In real life, however, Martin and the girl fell in love and got married.


The only book written in 2007 that did not appear on any list.
